Before the age of big box stores and grocery marts with literally dozens and dozens of cleaners, people had to rely on more natural ingredients for any number of household uses. It is almost a lost art form to take a seemingly inauspicious substance and use it for everyday uses. Vinegar is one of those simple liquids that have a natural property making it ideal for cleaning solutions in the home without exposing yourself to toxic chemicals. Here are a few uses for this miraculous fluid.

  • Mix one tablespoon of vinegar with sixteen ounces water and use a spray bottle to clean the shelves and interior walls of the refrigerator.
  • If you pour a quarter cup of vinegar into your garbage disposal and let sit for a couple minutes, and then run cold water through the sink with the disposal on, it will not only clean it but remove odors as well.
  • Vinegar also makes an excellent toilet cleaner. Simply pour one-half cup to a cup in the toilet bowl and let it sit for a couple hours. Swish and flush for a bleach-free and toxic chemical absent cleaning solution.
  • If you create a paste of baking soda and vinegar and then scrub sealed tile and grout, it will remove mold and soap scum. Rinse the area with warm water to complete.
  • You can use vinegar to clean your dish washer as well. Empty out the dishwasher first and pour one cup of vinegar in the bottom then run as usual.
  • Measure one half-cup of vinegar with a half-cup of water and run with your laundry at normal cycle to clean and remove mildew odor from clothing and towels.
  • Lastly, use vinegar as a floor cleaner. A half-cup of white vinegar per one gallon of warm or hot water will have the surface fresh and clean.
