Picnicking is a great way to get out into the nice weather, enjoy the company of others, and enjoy some wonderful food. It makes eating a more pleasurable experience (and not just because there aren’t as many dishes to put away). Considering the following tips will help you maximize this enjoyable outdoor eating:

1. Picnics are very flexible. It is completely up to you whether or not you want to prepare food for the outing, or if you want to just drop by the store to quickly gather a meal. Picnicking is a great way to learn new recipes, because you get the chance to make pretty much anything you want. You could try a new vegetable gumbo, or a raspberry walnut salad. Or if  that’s not a convenient option, stopping by the grocery store to pick up some fresh produce, salads, and deli sandwiches can be just as delicious!

2. Travel light, but bring what you need. There’s nothing worse than getting to your picnic and discovering that you forgot the plastic forks and napkins. Conversely, bringing too much stuff will weigh you down and become a burden for you, which would ruin your picnicking experience. However, there are some basics that are necessary for a picnic:

  • Disposable plates/cups for food
  • Disposable cutlery
  • Blanket or Towel for the food area
  • Ice packs (stay away from ice; once it melts, it’s a hassle)
  • Cooler for drinks
  • Baby wipes to clean up
  • A couple of trash bags

3. Avoid food that easily expires. Although it may be appealing to bring some refreshing yogurt, sour cream, or cream cheese, it would be best to stray from these types of food because it is a nuisance to worry about them going bad or being an awkward temperature. No one wants to eat warm, watery yogurt.
