There’s no need to lean on store-bought frozen treats (which are full of unhealthy additives and preservatives) when making your own is just as easy and fun! Here are a few tips to make your homemade frozen treats as delicious and healthy as possible.

  • There are an assortment of tasty ingredients that can be used to make your popsicles. Some of the best choices include: 100% fruit juices, ice cream, pudding, and yogurt. Healthier alternatives would be: coconut water, herbal teas, kefir, and kombuch. To add layers or textures to your treats, use whole or diced pieces of fruit, chocolate chips, or nuts. If you decide to do this, make sure that each layer completely freezes solid before adding the next layer.
  • The ingredients will expand during the freezing process. Because of this, it’s recommended that you leave ¼ inch space at the top of your popsicle mold.
  • If you are not using a popsicle mold, you may find that securing the popsicle stick in the center is a little tricky. To prevent the stick from slipping out of place, cover the top of your mold with a piece of tin foil after pouring in your ingredients. Then cut a small opening in the center of the foil and insert the popsicle stick.
  • Different ingredients will freeze at different rates. For example, yogurt based pops will freeze much slower than pops made of just juice. The size of your treats will also effect freezing time. Generally, all pops should be kept in the freezer overnight, or 6-8 hours. Your treats will stay fresh for as long as 1-2 weeks.
  • To release your popsicles its’ mold, run it under warm water for a minute, or let it sit out at room temperature for a few minutes.
