Why Family Dinners are Important

One of the reasons I started ‘No More’ to Go is  I believe family dinners are important. While I strive to provide you the best menu, recipes and grocery list around, I also hope these meals bring your family together.

Odds are your kids aren’t as open about their day as you’d like them to be. You ask them how their day was and they respond with a simple, “good”. Just like you, your kids are expected to be places, do things, and act a certain way all day. So, it’s no surprise they aren’t eager to report what was good. That’s why an hour block out of everyone’s day to sit and eat as a family is more important than ever.

Tell me about it

Bringing the family back around the table can create the communication that families need. Share your day, and allow your children to share theirs. Connecting with your children and allowing them to do the same with you keeps a mutual respect, understanding, and maybe most important: a sense of belonging between you. Let dinnertime be a unifying experience for the whole family to enjoy.

Do as I do

They don’t know it yet, and you might not have noticed it, but your every move is an impression on your kids. By bringing them together, eating right, and using the fitting table manners, you aren’t just “checking in,” but also setting a standard for your kids- so that as they grow, they learn to take only the best care for themselves and respect and listen to others around them.

Unplugged

This same block of time is enough to yank everyone out of the digital world we get wrapped up in. While our friends on Facebook are important, and that email has to be sent, escaping it all and returning to a face-to-face conversation with the most important people in our lives allows us to appreciate what we have and gain new respect for not only sharing our ideas, but listening to others. Being “always on” is enough to stress even the biggest extrovert. Unplug and return to you for an hour.

Make the time to reconnect with your family and make all your kids’ “good” days into an experience they will always carry and, because of you, share with their own families one day.
