It won’t be very long from now when that final school bell rings and you’ll have the kids clamoring for something to do. Your task is always to redirect that natural gravitation toward the video game console, computer, tablet, or television. Luckily, Austin has a myriad of summer activities to keep the kids occupied.

Bats on CongressCapitol Cruises offers trips around Lady Bird Lake and there is no better way to enjoy the nightly exodus of bats under the Congress Bridge than right under all the action. As the million or so bats head out for the night to dine, the kids will be amazed by the spectacle.

The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is only 15 miles outside of town. With more than 300 different animals, it’s a full day of fun. Some of the sanctuary residents the kids will enjoy include Galapagos tortoises, African lions and North American black bears. There is also an opportunity for the kids to feed animals such as sheep, goats and llamas.

Austin ZooThe Austin Children’s Museum, located in the heart of downtown, offers wonderful exhibits including engineering workshops, construction zones, pet clinics, train depots and grocery stores. There are also story-time sessions and camps open throughout summer.

Looking for something closer to a good-old-fashioned park experience? Look no further that the 350 acres of Zilker Metropolitan Park. There is the botanical garden, a hillside theater, a miniature train ride and Barton Springs: an iconic city swimming hole.

Children that are in the pre-teen or young teenage group can be a tough crowd to please. The Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex sports a host of attractions to help relieve summer tedium. With a movie theater, bowling alley, indoor roller-skating rink, food court and arcade, it is sure to please your older kids.
