Fresh herbs add flavor that can make your dishes great.

Basil

Basil is an important herb that has two main types: Sweet and Genoese. It is one of the most versatile herbs typically used in sauces, soups, and salads. It is best when paired with tomatoes but also goes beautifully with many different types of meat. Choose Basil that has bright green leaves without any discolored spots. The best way to store Basil is to place the cut stems in water on your counter or windowsill for up to a week.

Cilantro

Cilantro, also known as coriander, is one of the most popular herbs that people either love or hate. It has a bright flavor that is usually eaten raw by adding to your dish after its cooked. You can use the stems as well as the leaves, as they provide a concentrated flavor. Chop the cilantro by carefully rolling your knife back and forth, be careful not to over chop or it will turn dark. Store this herb in damp paper towel and place in a resealable plastic bag in the fridge. Use in soups, stews, salsas, as well as chicken and rice dishes. Rosemary

Rosemary has the most powerful flavor of all the herbs. Its pointy leaves provide a strong pine flavor that works well fresh or dried with pork, sauces, lamb, and stews. Store in the fridge either with the stems in a glass of water or in a plastic bag.

Oregano

Oregano is a herb that is primarily used in Greek and Italian cooking. Whether in salads, sauces, pizza, or meat dishes, it adds a bold flavor. Oregano can be found fresh or dried, but make sure to use half the amount of dried herb as it is very concentrated.  Store in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel and place in your fridge for up to 1 week.

Parsley

Parsley can be used in almost everything you cook. This herb has a mild peppery flavor that doesn’t overpower dishes. It can be used while cooking or sprinkled over a dish for a pop of color and taste. Flat-leaf parsley is used for cooking, while curly parsley is meant for a quick garnish. Thyme

Thyme is most popular in European cooking, and is paired with many dishes including meat, fish, and potatoes. It has an earthy flavor to it that combines nicely with other herbs such as rosemary and parsley. To prepare fresh thyme, simply run your fingers along the stem, peeling off the little leaves as you go. Store thyme in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel for up to 1 week.
